Literature Text

I woke up to the smell of waffles. Those delicious round things being flipped in a pan, placed on my plate and topped with syrup. Instantly I thought of my mom.

I drowsily rolled on my side and glanced at the digital clock. Four thirty in the morning. I rarely wake up during this time and I do because of waffles.

I got up and let out a very long yawn. Without fixing my bed, I rushed out of my room towards the kitchen.

"Waffles!" I exclaimed with glee.

"Honey, they're 'pancakes'," my mom said. She was still cooking in the far end of the room.

"Whatever, both are still good," I approached her. "As long as they're prepared by you," I smiled as she faced me.

Looking at the pancakes, I took a deep breath and went to set the table. One by one, took plates to set them on the table. I stop at the fourth one.

"Mom?" I asked.

"Yeah?" she replied.

"Is dad gonna be home from work?"

"I understand that you miss him honey, but dad is a busy man."

I sighed, "I guess promises are really made to be broken"

"Your dad is a captain. He is urgently needed in 'times like these'."

I sat down and kept silent as I eat the wa- I mean pancakes. Mom said some things but I wasn't really listening.

A while later, a voice spoke, "'Sup Eli?"

"'Sup dork," I rolled my eyes.

My brother, Matt, smirked. I guess he forgot that he read my diary, which I prefer to call 'notes'.

"I heard that today is a big day for you Elisa," mom changes the subject.

Oh right. I forgot. We're gonna scout a hospital and see what we could get there. It's a perilous task but someone's gotta do it.

I ate my last piece of pancakes and went.

"Isn't it a bit too early?" mom smiled.

"I'll be fine," I replied.

"Do you really have to go?" mom asked worryingly, "can't you stay?"

"Mom this is just for a day. I'll be home after dinner."

I approached my brother and patted his back, "Look after mom."

"I love you...," mom's eyes were starting to water as I reached for the door.

I opened the door and stepped outside, "I love you guys," I said without turning back. Then I closed the door.

I was greeted by a cold breeze as I walk past the suburbs. I saw some people mowing, watering, taking the trash and warmly saying 'Good morning'.

It all felt normal. It felt like I was in a regular community.

Then it showed itself.

A huge, grey, one-and-a half story high concrete wall.

I know I should thank the people who built and and those who aided in its construction. This tall ominous structure has protected us for years. Shielding us from the horrors past it.

But somehow I feel imprisoned. Everything is here, family, shelter and other necessities. I'm tired of this daily repetition. This survival thing is exhausting.

I turned left trying to avoid gazing at the wall. I'm headed towards the hall to meet our captain.

The sky was only dimly lit, maybe like five? I went up the stairs of the district hall towards its glass door. Warm air blew my face upon entering.

Slowly, I walked towards the Lounge. I lifted a pillow and sat on the couch gently. The Lounge was small, wit a smooth floor and wooden walls.

Then a thought came to mind.

Last night.

I'm very interested with this concept, to say the least, but I do have just a few comments. I feel like there isn't quite enough description to grab hold of the readers eyes and thee is a tad bit too many I's. You might also want to work on how many different paragraphs you have. Other than that, the story is great and very interesting, I look forward to reading more
